1987

The critics were very kind to us during 1986 as shown below:

There was a lot to live up to in 1987! Our first season 24 March – 1 April was a triple bill at the Natal Playhouse Opera with the Natal Philharmonic Orchestra. It consisted of Elastokovich by Veronica Paeper, The Prodigal Son by Sonje Mayo and my version of La Valse.

Does anyone have any photos of Prodigal Son?

We opened Impressions from Africa  in Pietermaritzburg on 1&2 July and then ran the programme at the Natal Playhouse Drama Theatre from 8 July. The programme was notable in that the eminent Durban-born, internationally acclaimed artist Andrew Verster, designed all four pieces: they were Chris Kindo’s Dans van die Reēn , Marlene Blom’s Cave Canem, Robyn Orlin’s Local Stops II and Jeanne Zaidel-Rudolf’s The River People.

Impressions from Africa ran back to back with another mixed programme Les Biches, Shostakovich pas de deux, Migrations and  Pineapple Poll on 3 &4 July in Pietermaritzburg and 11 &12 July Durban

Certainly the biggest single production that NDC undertook was my new production of Romeo and Juliet with designs by the inimitable Peter Cazalet. R&J ran, with NPO, at the Natal Playhouse Opera 3-25 September.

R&J was followed by Napac Dance Co. On Tour  14 Oct-13 Nov.No records to be found of where we went on that tour (or what the fourth ballet was!)

The Selfish Giant  Loft Theatre Natal Playhouse 8-20 December

At the end 1987 we mounted my children’s ballet which played to full houses in the Loft Theatre, The Selfish Giant. Huge problems with the tree that had to sprout blossoms! I cannot find any photographs. Surely someone must have some?
